Complete pond clean-outs: a fresh start for a pond that has gotten away from you.
When routine maintenance isn't enough. We drain, remove years of sludge and algae, clean every surface and feature, and refill your pond safely with your fish back home the same day.
When is it time for a full clean-out?
Every pond slowly collects what falls into it. Leaves, pollen, fish waste and dead algae sink and break down into a layer of sludge on the bottom. For a while the biological filter keeps up. Eventually it cannot, and you get murky water, string algae, a smell, and fish that look stressed.
If you can no longer see the bottom, the water smells, the waterfall is slowing down, or the pond has not been drained in several years, a complete clean-out is the reset it needs. Afterward, regular maintenance keeps it from going back.
What a complete clean-out includes
- Safely relocating your fish to a shaded, aerated holding tank with their own pond water
- Draining the pond
- Removing sludge, sediment, leaves and debris
- Removing excessive algae from rocks, liner and features
- Cleaning pond surfaces, waterfalls, streams and skimmers
- Inspecting and cleaning the pump and filter media
- Trimming overgrown aquatic plants
- Refilling with dechlorinated water and beneficial bacteria
- Acclimating and returning your fish
We rinse, we do not sterilize. Keeping some of the good bacteria in place is what lets a freshly cleaned pond settle quickly instead of crashing.
Our 8-step clean-out process
Relocate the fish
Fish go into a secure, aerated holding tank filled with their own pond water.
Drain
The pond is pumped down so we can reach every surface.
Remove sludge
Years of sediment, leaves and muck come out by hand and pump.
Wash surfaces
Rocks, liner, waterfall and stream are rinsed clean without stripping beneficial bacteria.
Service the pump & filter
Pump is inspected and cleaned; filter media is cleaned or replaced as needed.
Trim plants
Overgrown lilies, grasses and marginals are trimmed and divided.
Refill & treat
Fresh water with dechlorinator and a dose of beneficial bacteria.
Return the fish
Fish are temperature-acclimated and released back into their clean pond.
Frequently asked about pond clean-outs.
How long does a pond clean-out take?
Most residential ponds take a single day. Very large ponds or ponds with severe buildup can run into a second day.
Will my fish be okay?
Yes. Fish are held in aerated water from their own pond, kept shaded, and acclimated before going back. This is the same process pond professionals use everywhere, and it is far safer for fish than leaving them in a pond that has gone bad.
How often should I do a complete clean-out?
Once a year is ideal for most ponds, timed for late winter through spring. Ponds on a good weekly or 6-month maintenance plan can often go longer between full clean-outs.
Do you fix leaks or replace pumps during a clean-out?
A clean-out is the best time to find and fix problems since the pond is empty. We will show you what we find and quote repairs before doing them.
